A musical composition is like some long organic molecule bearing a message encoded in its structure.
We hear the musical message in the language of emotion and interpret the succession of tones and harmonies as having correspondence in our real universe, correspondence with the elements in the set of our fundamental assumptions about our being. It's a message whose correctness is measured by its harmony and elegance, and if it shows new patterns and relationships, new ways things progress and resolve, then we apply the analogy to our belief structure and the endorphins are released. We enjoy music, a hit song goes viral and everyone sees life a little differently. I would say, for example, the spread of rock and roll contributed to the decline of totalitarianism and communism. |

As a species we are always looking for previously undetected patterns and relationships. Like a newborn first opening its eyes to see millions of unconnected pixels, we begin the process of classification. The big mysteries of life stare us all in the face and every generation tries to inch a little closer to the grand unified solution. Like some horrendous transcendental equation that can only be solved through iteration, every generation arises, takes its best shot, then makes way for the next.
I hope you enjoy the music here. I hope it has resonance and rings true for you. I hope you can dig Play Innocent, the band. Karl Mahlmann © 2012 |
